Okay you can get back on the ship now, we are returning to earth, and please don't hit your head on the dash as we hurtle through the atmosphere. Well, you need a couple like this to wake up to reality. There ain't no way to describe, and why bother to over-summarize either? Things didn't happen - namely basic functionality and motor skills.
The only team which the DPWers defeated for two years in a row gave it back in droves this time around, turning the tables. Poor Vinny Pastore made his return to the mound last night, but unfortunately to a suddenly hard-hitting Sharks team that took everyone by surprise. They batted around in the second and sixth, and spared the crew some time by mercying them out in the top of the seventh. At one point, they pulled off five singles in a row, resulting in, well, a few runs. There were not many extra base hits, just a barrage of good singles hitters.
Both teams were understaffed, including in the girl department, thus resulting in a nine-person field for each team. Surprisingly, the 500ers could not find gaps that were the size of washed-out spillways. There was no severe incompetence at the bat, only failure to cash in on opportunities.
The first inning could be summarized as an inning of inches. A foul fly down third base missed by inches, a bloop single between Ralph Hanson and the Ventman, and a trickler down third. The fielding on the whole needed a bit of work. The lone run was driven in by Anthony Ventarola, whose subsequent at-bat was a wussy grounder
The other innings were non-descript in their sheer horror. Why report? Hopefully a fuller staff next week will bring our team back to prominence.
Notes:
Mike MacNeil should be back from dad-hood in a week or two, Michelle should be back from babysitting, Trish will someday finally have her baby, Bob is finished Monday with the boy scout rigamorole. And Jimmy crack corn and I dont care to all you guys at home.
I've said it before - I'll say it again. A team without Andrea and Michelle is no team at all! They have contributed greatly this year and we hope they stick around for years to come!!
Kudos to the lady playing third for the Sharks - she went 4 for 5. And the girl pitching had great form and pitched well also.
Donna, sorry you couldn't make it to the annual showdown this year....
